With the new style bathrooms and decorating concepts that customers seem to favor, there can be a few ways to install baths. The way the bath was installed will dictate whether the leak can be repaired easily or with great difficulty.
Most baths are built in and then tiled:
The leak from the bath could come from various places;
The bath is not sealing properly on the edges of the tiling. This normally happens when there is a shower above the bath, or the bath has not been set properly on river sand or cement. When someone sits in the bath, or in the case of a shower, stand, the bath moves and the silicone seal breaks. Short term solution is to re-silicone the edges, long term is to re-set the whole bath with river sand and cement.
Bath waste is not sealing and is leaking- the waste could be easily accessible if the is a trap door on the side of the bath. If not, then we will chisel out a few tiles or if we can, chisel out some brick work from outside. Once we have access to the waste, we unscrew it and replace it.
Bath combination trap is leaking. Again the bath combination trap could be easily accessible if there is a trap door on the side of the bath. If not we will chisel out a few tiles or if we can, chisel out some brick work from outside. Once we have access to the bath combination trap, we un-do it and replace it.
The bath waste pipe is leaking. The bath combination trap is connected to the main drain via a 50mm PVC pipe. The 50mm PVC pipe could be leaking. This could be quite tricky to repair. It will depend on where the pipe has been run i.e. in concrete, under the floor, in the wall etc etc. the leak normally occurs on a joint as some plumbers use inferior glue.
Water pipes that were installed behind or above the bath. The water pipes will leak in the wall, however due to the tiles and depending how far into the wall the pipes were, the leak will run down the wall, behind the bath and it would appear as if the bath was leaking. Again we will have to trace where the pipes are and then open up the tiles and repair the leak.
